BLETCHLEY PARK

OUR DAY TRIP TO BLETCHLEY PARK TOOK PLACE ON 21ST JULY 2016

On a glorious July day we se off to Bletchley Park.  Many years ago I visited these historic gounds and house which play such an important part during WWII.  i was amazed at the reconstruction work that had been done and was still being undertaken to ensure that we never forget the contribution that those who worked there made.  I had not realised that, in shifts, 9000 people worked at Bletchley Park, the majority of whom were women.  It was a hot day, and looking at the photos of those young women I thought how uncomfortable they must have been in their stockings, high heels and very formal attire.  The airless huts with blackout curtains and the windows shut - and the fug of cigarette smoke - how did they manage?  But manag they did.  There is much to see, the huts, the mansion and the pigeon exhibition (!) as well as Alan Turing's mug chained to the radiator!

A big thank you to Alex Toohey who organised this trip and gave us a very useful aide memoire prior to the visit.  Thank you!
